Retirement Living – Affordable Homes

Every person deserves a place to call home.

Affordable Retirement Living

Private rental can seem impossible if you’re on a low income, especially if you’re also dealing with unemployment, financial stress or mental health issues.

Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot figures reveal just 0.8 per cent of available housing stock in Australia is affordable and appropriate for a single person on an Age Pension.

That’s where we come in.

We believe our nation’s older generation deserve access to safe and secure housing; a place where you can live your life to the fullest.

As part of our commitment to comfortable and secure housing, we have 426 independent living units across 24 locations, with more in the pipeline.

Our locations vary across the inner suburbs of Melbourne and are all conveniently located near shops, public transport and the local Catholic church.

It’s not just about having a roof over your head; we are here to ensure you feel comfortable, safe and connected to your community with access to Pastoral Care, home maintenance, gardening and personal support such as Home Care Packages.

Our units

Walking into our units you’ll find a living room, kitchen, single bedroom and bathroom. We also have a small number of two-bedroom units, which are allocated to couples.

Your home will also include:

  • split-system air conditioning
  • built-in robes
  • window furnishings
  • floor coverings.

Some ground floor units have a small garden or enclosed courtyard.

“I am 110 per cent happy here. It’s so lovely. Everyone feels safe and we all know and look out for each other.” – John, Mentone.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a home you will need to be over 55 years of age and:

  • Have documents from a doctor saying you can live independently.
  • Supply a current income statement from Centrelink or proof of other income.
  • Be retired or working a maximum of 15 hours per week.
  • Have assets below $100,000.

Please note: As there is no on-site care provided, applicants must be able to manage independently. However, if you need a little extra support, just give us a call and we can talk you through our At-Home Aged Care service options.

What our residents have to say!

“I wouldn’t have been able to afford living in a private house on a pension. Rents are exorbitant if you’re a widow like me. I’d probably be living in public housing, which is very hard to get. VMCH is excellent. Here, I’m independent and I’m comfortable.”
Ita, Ivanhoe

“(Living here) means that I’m not stressed out. I feel in the private sector, you’re always wondering, ‘are they going to get rid of you’? Here, I feel safe, that’s my main priority.”
Cecilia, Richmond.

“The upkeep is minimal, we have inside cleaning done each fortnight at low cost, and gardening is handled by our family as we now find this difficult physically. We are very happy here.”
Alan and Barb, Ivanhoe.
